McCarthy hints at roles for both Coleman and Doherty

Mick McCarthy could find room in his Republic of Ireland team for BOTH Seamus Coleman and Matt Doherty.

McCarthy’s second tenure as Ireland manager begins on Saturday with a Euro 2020 qualifier against Gibraltar.

Ireland then host Georgia in Dublin next Tuesday night.

There have been repeated questions about whether McCarthy will opt for Killybegs’ Coleman or for Doherty, who has been showing good form at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, an injury to Callum O’Dowda that has forced his withdrawal has led to suggestions that Doherty could be included on the right side of McCarthy’s midfield.

“Matt Doherty could play there. He could,” McCarthy said.

“That conundrum has been thrown up because of injuries of course.

“Robbie Brady could play there but he’s not been playing many minutes, he only played 12 minutes at the weekend and the week before it was a similar amount.

“If I’m looking for players who have been playing on a regular basis, the Doc comes into consideration I think for that position.”

Irish captain Coleman sat out yesterday’s training session at Abbotstown having just returned from Everton’s win over Chelsea on Sunday, but will be back today.
