Of all the sights for the Donegal supporters at Croke Park on Saturday night, perhaps the most positive came in the warm-up.

As Donegal trotted from the Hogan Stand’s tunnel, among their number – for the first time in nine months – was Patrick McBrearty.

The Kilcar man has been back in training with Donegal recently, having recovered from a cruciate knee ligament injury.

McBrearty wasn’t part of the 26-man Donegal squad for Saturday’s Division 2 final against Meath, but he took an active part in part of the warm-up.

“Patrick has been with us for the last ten days or so and he’s ready to go,” Bonner said.

“He’ll get some club games under the belt now and we’ll get him up to speed for the Championship.”

McBrearty had been in flying form last year when he sustained the injury against Fermanagh in the Ulster final. Now, he’s poised to return for his club in the All-County Football League.
