McBrearty set for seventh championship campaign

This Sunday will mark just under seven years to the day that Paddy McBrearty made his first senior start in Donegal colours.

The opponents from that day, Cavan, will now travel to Mac Cumhaill Park hoping to halt McBrearty. Back in 2011 the young forward notched 1-3 on the way to a comfortable victory for Donegal.

McBrearty, now twenty-four is a pivotal member of the Donegal senior side. The accuracy of his left foot as well as his ability to win ball inside have made him one of the most dangerous forwards in the country.

McBrearty featured in five of Donegal’s seven national league outings making his tally of thirty-four points even more impressive.

Remarkably the forward has won almost everything there is to win in the game despite his young age. But McBrearty will know that he can truly cement his place as one of Donegal’s greatest if the winning honours continue to arrive.

Kilcar now have five players on the Donegal squad and McBrearty’s younger brother Stephen has cemented his place as an important member.

Declan Bonner stated at a press conference on Tuesday that his side will enter the game on Sunday with a clean bill of health. However the manager did not give anything away regarding who will be in his starting XV.

“It’s all coming together at the right time. The lads have been training very hard for the last five or six weeks and it’s been very good. We need to get a performance now to take us over the line,” Bonner said.

Donegal have played an expansive style of football so far this year, Bonner joked that he would be playing fifteen men behind the ball come Sunday but went on to add that his side will have a plan.
