THE MAYOR OF DONEGAL, Councillor Ciaran Brogan, has said that Donegal Council will continue to back the Donegal Sports Star Awards.

On Friday night, 750 guests packed into the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny for the 40th Donegal Sports Star Awards function – the biggest one yet since their inception in 1976.

Since 1979, the County Council has been hand-in-hand with the award.

The local authority sponsored the schools awars before becoming the main sponsor in 1997.

“We have to fully commit to support this great event towards the 50th anniversary,” Councillor Brogan told Friday night’s function.

“All the members have been in a position through Development Funds to support sport in the county.

“We realise there is huge value in sporting organisation. Some of the real heroes deserve huge recognition. Some of the coaches, organisers and parents over the last 40 years deserve huge credit.”

Mark English was the recipient of the overall Donegal Sports Star of the Year, the Letterkenny athlete – who will represent Ireland at the Olympic Games this summer – retaining the gong he also collected last January.
