MARTIN MCHUGH WILL return for a second year as the manager of the Kilcar senior team, it has been confirmed.

McHugh’s appointment for the 2017 was ratified by club members at tonight’s AGM in the Parish Hall.

In 2016, Kilcar reached a first Donegal SFC final in 23 years, but were beaten 1-10 to 0-12 by Glenswilly in the final last month.

Kilcar had become the story of the summer in Donegal as they marched through the Championship in McHugh’s first year at the helm of his home club.

A 5-10 to 1-11 win over champions Naomh Conaill in the semi-final had them raging hot favourites for the final, but a Michael Murphy-led Glenswilly derailed them at the final hurdle.

Kilcar did recover from that disappointment to win the All-County Football League Division 1 title, overcoming Naomh Conaill 2-16 to 3-8 in a winner-takes-all last game of the year at Davy Brennan Memorial Park.

McHugh will again have the reigns in Towney for next year.

As a player, McHugh won Dr Maguire in 1980, 1985, 1989 and 1993. He was player-manager in ’89.

McHugh managed Cavan to the Ulster SFC title in 1997 and has had two spells as manager of IT Sligo in the Sigerson Cup.

He is also currently managing Ulster University, Jordanstown’s Sigerson Cup team.
