LyIT boxers represent Ireland at Haringey Box Cup

TWO LETTERKENNY Institute of Technology students were part of an Irish team that competed at the Haringey Box Cup this week.

The Irish Athletic Third level Boxing Association (IATBA) sent a team to Alexandra Palace, London with LyIT students Mark McCole (Dungloe) and Saidhbh Greene (Carrick on Shannon) making their debuts for the IATBA team.

McCole was adjudged to have lost his quarter final contest on a 2-1 decision despite everybody present feeling he had won well. It was of little consolation to McCole after a gutsy display against a boxer who went on to make the final, narrowly losing that decider.

Greene drew the European Champion, Amy Broadhurst, from Islington B.C. in England in her semi final.

Greene struggled to get her shots on target during the first two rounds of an exciting contest but in rounds three and four she offloaded with some cracking shots to slow the European Champion down.

Her right hook to the body proved extremely effective and her work rate in close was telling in slowing Broadhurst down.

Despite a gallant effort, Greene came out on the wrong side of the decision, but will have been heartened by her overall display.
