GMIT scored three goals in the last 23 minutes to condemn Letterkenny Institute of Technology to defeat in this afternoon’s Rustlers Cup quarter-final.

Letterkenny Institute of Technology 1 GMIT 4

After Liam Walsh had cancelled out Chris O’Donnell’s opener, Matthew Barrett’s brace and another by Michael Lafferty booked GMIT’s place in the last four.

GMIT included in their number Joe Coll and Brian Proctor from Donegal.

GMIT took the lead in the 35th minute as O’Donnell drilled home a superb free kick from 30 yards.

However, LyIT’s response was instant. Gareth Doherty’s superb cross found the head of Walsh and his lovely flicked header gave Coll no chance.

The hosts had a chance in the early moments, but Walsh’s attempted pull-back to Connor Gormley was just behind the in-rushing Derry City midfielder.

Matthew Barrett tested Jamie Bell in the LyIT goal before Daragh Black’s and Walsh had attempts blocked.

LyIT dominated the opening 20 minutes of the second half, with a number of shots either blocked or repelled by Coll.

However, GMIT stole into the lead, against the run of play, on 67 minutes when Barrett wonderfully guided Moise Assogba cross past Bell.

Ten minutes later, Barrett was sent clear and he steered home in style.

GMIT added another when Lafferty finished off a sweeping move a minute from the end to send them through.
