LORETO COMMUNITY SCHOOL MILFORD squeezed out Abbey Vocational School in the FAI Under-17 Ulster Schools’ League final.

In a contest that could’ve gone either way – or even to extra-time – the Donegal town side contributed much, only to lose out with Cameron Gormley, Connor Gormley and Ryan Flood scoring the all-important goals for the eventual winners. Conor Gavigan and Daniel Meehan were on target for Abbey.

Dane Dunworth, the Milford goalkeeper, made a couple of late saves to confirm victory for his side.

It was Abbey, who lost the toss and had to play the final at Milford, who were the better side to begin with. Peadar Mogan went close on a couple of occasions, while Graham Harron also drove over.

On 27 minutes, a free-kick from Jack Keaney was spilled by Dunworth and following an inventive backheel from Daniel Meehan, Ben Sweeney was just off target.

Milford went in front on 36 minutes – somewhat against the run of play – when Flood got to the byline and crossed for Cameron Gormley to score from five yards out.

Then, on 43 minutes, they made it 2-0 when, following a breakaway, Ryan Toye was fouled by John Relihan and referee Vincent McLoughlin pointed to the spot. Connor Gormley blasted home the penalty.

Just a minute later, though, Abbey pulled a goal back to give them something to take into the break. Keaney’s free into the penalty area wasn’t cleared and Gavigan was on hand to score from 14 yards. Milford were 2-1 up at half-time.

On the hour-mark, Milford restored their two-goal cushion when Cameron Gormley freed Shane McNamee with an excellent pass and his pull-back was slotted home by Flood.

However, once more, Abbey came back fighting and they made it 3-2 on 70 minutes when, following a series of throw-ins, Keaney’s shot was slightly deflected and Meehan beat Dunworth to the loose ball to stab home.

Pushing now for an equaliser, Abbey saw substitute Ronan McHugh flash a shot inches wide and Gavigan headed wide from a corner.

In injury time, Sweeney got free down the right and his superb crossed was smashed goalward by Oisin Gorrell, only for Dunworth and a combination of defenders to block. Dunworth then tipped away Keaney’s follow-up and Loreto did enough to win.
