Listen: Yvonne Bonner excited for ‘professional’ move to Sydney

Yvonne Bonner says she’s excited for her new Australian Rules adventure with the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The Glenfin woman heads to Sydney later this month to begin pre-season training for the 2019 AFLW season.

Bonner was chosen from the recent CrossCoders trial in Melbourne and has been signed as a rookie for the 2019 campaign, joining Mayo star Cora Staunton at the Giants.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Bonner said.

“I’m excited to get stuck into that and don’t have much time to mope around.

“I’m really excited to see what the professional set up is like and getting to play with the top-quality players overs there.”

Bonner will still play with Donegal and Glenfin in 2019 and with the AFLW season finishing as early as April, the 31-year-old will have a full Championship campaign with both.

Bonner impressed at the trial and Giants Head Coach Alan McConnell has already spoken of his admiration for the player.

Bonner has been honing her skills with the oval ball at Pairc Taobhoige in recent weeks and on Saturday she played her last game of Gaelic football for a few months as Glenfin were beaten in the Ulster senior ladies final by Donaghmoyne.

She said: “We just didn’t play to the best of our ability. We had no real rub of the green and it was disappointing. We just didn’t get the luck.

“We hit the post and could have been back to two points. You need all those wee things, but you need a big performance too.”
