Listen: William Lynch says ‘Croker’ incentive can aid Naomh Colmcille

William Lynch’s selfless role has been often forgotten in Naomh Colmcille’s run to the All-Ireland JFC semi-final.

On Saturday, Naomh Colmcille face Knocknagree from Cork at Cusack Park with a berth in Croke Park the carrot that dangles in front of Ryan McKinley’s team.

Lynch’s – pictured above with his brother, Michael – performances have been one of the features of Naomh Colmcille’s already history-making surge.

“Some games I’ve been sweeper and others i’ve been in as a third midfielder. It’s worked well so far,” he says of his job.

“We changed it up for the quarter-final of the Donegal Championship. We were man-to-man before that, but we needed a bit of steel back there. We were putting up big scores, but we were conceding a lot.

“If you work your way into a game and keep it tight, you can afford to go the point or two down and the game isn’t out of sight after 10 or 15 minutes.”

While at college in Liverpool, the St Johnston man became friendly with some of the John Mitchells players who lost in the 2009 JFC final to Skellig Rangers. The Mitchells were back in the final in 2015, losing to Brosna, also from Kerry.

Lynch said: “It’s some incentive getting to Croke Park. We’ll never get to play in Croker again. I do think that we’ve won Donegal and Ulster, but losing this will feel worse than the feeling of winning them. If we perform how we can, we won’t be far away.”
