Listen: ‘We handed it to them’ – Donegal manager Declan Bonner

DONEGAL manager Declan Bonner was left frustrated as his team blew a seven-point lead against Galway.

Goals by Michael Murphy and Ciaran Thompson had Donegal leading 2-5 to 0-4 after 42 minutes, but Galway hit back to win by a point.

Corner-backs Johnny Heaney and Séan Kelly netted the goals as the Tribesmen turned the tables.

“It’s not a case that Galway won the match; we handed it to them,” Bonner told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“We were seven points up and we should have kicked on. We didn’t and that’s the disappointing thing.

“We’re very disappointed. We went seven points up and, for some reason or another, we switched off.”

Heaney kick-started the Galway comeback just after Thompson had opened up Donegal’s seven-point advantage.

Bonner said: “The top sides don’t allow goals like that to happen, especially after we got a three-pointer. We have to learn from it.

“That was a harsh lesson for a lot of those lads. Overall, we probably deserved to win. It was a difficult day for football., but we’re disappointed to get nothing out of it.”
