Listen: Rodney Bates takes heart from Raphoe’s second-half fightback

Rodney Bates is hopeful that Raphoe can remain in the Premier League this season.

Raphoe put up a big fight in the opening game of the 2018/19 season, but went down 3-2 against Newry at the Royal and Prior – a comeback, after being 3-0 down, falling just short.

“There are a lot of positives to take from the second half,” Bates said.

“We’ll forget about the first half. We’re very pleased with how they came out after the team talk at half-time and battled hard.”

Bates hailed the performance of young Tommy Orr, who scored both the Raphoe goals.

He said: “We did well to hold onto Tommy. A few clubs in Belfast were looking for him, but we’re delighted to hold onto him.

“We’re working from a small pool of players and we might have 14 maximum. As long as I get effort from the guys. I know if we work hard and stay together, results will come.”
