Listen: Relief for McBrearty as Lifford earn derby win

Kevin McBrearty was relieved as his Lifford Celtic bagged a precious derby win at Ballybofey United last night.

A 4-1 win at the Finn Valley Centre considerably tightens things in Division 1, with only two points between the top five teams.

Lifford player-manager McBrearty netted an unfortunate own goal just before half-time, but was excellent in the second-half to keep his rearguard intact under intense Ballybofey pressure.

“They were three points hard earned,” McBrearty reflected.

“Ballybofey is never an easy game.

“The lads battled hard and I think we deserved the win.”

With the exception of Gweedore Celtic and Cranford, the other seven teams are all derby fixtures for each other and it’s shaping up to be an equally close battle in the table.

McBrearty said: “It’s going to be tight. Five or six teams have a chance of winning it.

“If one team can string three or four wins on the bounce, they’d run away with it.”
