Raymond Shiels believes the Donegal League is capable of emulating Inishowen and making significant inroads in the Oscar Traynor Cup.
Donegal have watched as Inishowen have won the trophy and been consistent performers in recent years.
The Donegal League did reach a semi-final in the 2015/16 season, losing out to Clare 3-1 in Ennis. But that has been the exception rather than the rule for Donegal, now under the management of Kilmacrennan’s Shiels, who has taken over from Brian Dorrian.
“It’s a massive step to take, but I’m looking forward to it,” Shiels, whose squad faces Finn Harps in a friendly at The Diamond Park, Ballyare, this evening.
“The talent is in the League. They lost in a semi-final in Clare and I think they should have won it that year.
“I’m relishing it. We’re very lucky to have so many lads on board. We’ve got a great response. In years gone by, lads didn’t take it as serious as they should have. The last couple of years, that has turned around.”
The Donegal League will be in a three-team group, alongside Inishowen and Sligo-Leitrim, in this season’s competition.
