Listen: Paddy McCourt talks promotion hopes for Finn Harps and new job at Derry City

Paddy McCourt is hoping to end his playing days by leading Finn Harps back to the Premier Division.

The 34-year-old confirmed today that he will hang up his boots at the end of the current season to take up a new role as Head of Academy at Derry City.

McCourt has been a real hit at Harps over the last two seasons, but has the finish line in sight for his time at Finn Park.

His new job at Derry City will begin in mid-September.

“I feel that I owe it to Finn Harps to see the season out with them,” McCourt said.

“I’d be absolutely delighted off we could go on some kind of run now and give the club another year, or however long, in the Premier Division. It would be a great way to finish the season, on a personal level and for the club.

“I’ve grown very fond of Finn Harps and a lot of people associated with it. It’s a real good family club.”

McCourt revealed how he was ‘sold’ the idea of signing for Harps in early 2017 by Paul Hegarty, who he knew from his time at Derry.

McCourt said: “I’d just left Glenavon and took a step back. I didn’t enjoy Glenavon; it just wasn’t right. I was in no rush to do anything.

“Paul sold it to me. Everything he told me was true. He told me they do everything right and, in fairness to them, they do.

“Whatever anyone can throw at Higgsy or Ollie (Horgan), they’re the two hardest working men I’ve ever come across in football. I just hope we can get some success because they deserve it.”
