Listen: Neil Gallagher expects a ‘humdinger’ from Donegal and Tyrone

Former Donegal midfielder Neil Gallagher is predicting a ‘humdinger’ in Ballybofey on Sunday when Donegal and Tyrone joust.

A place in the All-Ireland semi-finals is the carrot for the winner of the Super 8 tie, which will be played before a capacity crowd at Sean MacCumhaill Park.

All-Ireland winner Gallagher played 140 times for Donegal before confirming his retirement in early 2017.

What the Glenswilly man would give to be involved in the heat of Sunday’s inferno.

“Tyrone in Ballybofey in a quarter-final with a chance to get into a semi-final, you’d love to be in the middle of that,” Gallagher said.

“They’re the games you be mad looking forward to as a player. It’s a winner-takes-all in Ballybofey, you’d love to be even back in training.

“It’ll be so focussed, but it’ll be so enjoyable. It’ll be a great week now leading up to it.”

Gallagher says that there is ‘nothing between them’, but has no doubt that Ballybofey is the place to be this weekend.

He said:  “It’ll be a humdinger of a game.

“Tyrone will set up fairly defensive and Donegal might have to mirror that. It’ll be a fascinating game and a bit of patience will be required.

“This game will be a very tactical one.”

After a five-star display against Roscommon yielded nine points, there has been intense debate again about the positioning of Donegal captain Michael Murphy, but Gallagher doesn’t have to think too much about where he’d play him.

He said: “I’d always play Murphy on the edge of the square. If you’re a full-back, you don’t want to see him coming. He can just turn it on. He’s unreal and he’s so dangerous.”
