MICHAEL Murphy has backed his Letterkenny Institute of Technology players to turn in a performance on their Sigerson Cup debut tomorrow.

LyIT face Athlone IT in Athlone at 2pm as the Port Road students make their bow in the Sigerson competition following their winning of the Trench Cup last year.

“The players have taken the mantle on and they see the opportunity,” Murphy told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“The commitment and the desire are there.

“I think they will perform. I would be very confident with them. They have done everything they can so far. It’s about going out now and putting the work to good use.”

Donegal players Michael Langan, Peadar Mogan, Eoghan McGettigan and Michael Lynch are among the key players on Murphy’s squad, who had a testing introduction pre-Christmas in the Ryan Cup.

“We’re under no illusions,” the Glenswilly man said.

“It’s the first time we’ve got an opportunity to go into it. There was a decision to be made after winning the Trench, if we’d push on or stay at Trench. The decision as made and the hunger was there to give it a rattle.”
