Listen: Michael Funston looks forward to Inter-League battle with USL

It’s 14 years since Michael Funston last represented the Ulster Senior League in the FAI Intermediate Inter-League Tournament – but the Bonagee ace is eyeing up a challenge this weekend in Galway.

Funston has returned to the USL this season after a stellar senior career that included over 300 appearances in the colours of Finn Harps.

Having signed up with his native Bonagee again, Funston has been recruited by USL boss Anthony Gorman for the trip west.

“The last time I played in it was in 2003,” Funston reflected.

“That was a good experience and I’m looking forward to going back to it.

“I’m actually excited about it because of how well the USL has done in it.

“There has been a change in mentality, which is very important. It’s not a weekend away anymore; we’re down to do business. I’m glad that’s the mindset now.

“When you play in the USL and this opportunity comes up, I don’t know why players haven’t taken it up.”
