Listen: Maxi Curran says Donegal’s ladies belong on the big stage

Maxi Curran says it’s only right that Donegal’s senior ladies get a chance to play as a curtain-raiser to the Donegal senior men on Sunday.

Before Donegal and Mayo lock horns in the crunch Allianz League relegation battle, Donegal ladies take on Kerry at Sean MacCumhaill Park (throw-in 1pm).

It is a historic day on Sunday as it is the first time the senior men and ladies teams will grace the same stage for League games.

“It’s a big day for the girls and it’s all adding to a nice blend,” Curran said.

“The quality of football has got very high and the standard has improved immensely. They prepare easily on a bar with the boys.

“They put in a massive shift and it’s nice for them to be able to play on the big stage and show their product in front of a big crowd.”

After an opening day loss to Dublin, a draw with Galway and wins over Westmeath and Monaghan have put Donegal into the reckoning for a League semi-final.

Curran said: “It’s a big relief that we don’t have to look in the other direction. It’s pretty much secure that we’ll be in Division 1. It’s nice not to worry about relegation.

“We’re moving in the right direction. It was about staying in Division 1 and finding new players. In the last couple of years, they worked off maybe 17 or 18 players all the time, but we tried to freshen it up. We have put ourselves in a good position.”
