Mark English has described as ‘amazing’ his winning of a third European medal this evening in Glasgow.

By Chris McNulty, at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow

After a four-year absence, English returned to a European podium at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow as he took bronze in the 800m final at the European Indoor Championships.

English finished in 1:47.39 to finish behind Álvaro de Arriba from Spain and Britain’s Jamie Webb. The bronze nugget follows his European bronze from 2014 and a European Indoor silver from 2015.

“It feels amazing,” English told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub immediately after his race.

“It was great, just to get a medal again. It’s fantastic.

“I’m just delighted to come away with a medal. This means a lot to come back here and get a medal after a four-year absence. It’s pretty special.”

English was never outside the top three in the race, but revealed he had some doubts as he rounded the final bend.

He said: “I didn’t think I was going to hang on. I thought he was going to come on the outside and it was going to be deza vu but I held on nicely.”
