Listen: ‘I’ll not be near it’ – Whitestrand boss to vacate post

BRENDAN Callaghan says he will walk away from the Donegal League following Whitestrand United’s play-off defeat on Sunday.

Whitestrand lost 2-0 to St Catherine’s in the Division 1-2 play-off at The Diamond Park in a game that has left a very sour taste around McGarvey Park.
‘Strand were irate at the three-week delay in re-fixing the game – postponed from its original August 9 date due to a Covid-19 precaution – and Callaghan accused the Donegal League of ‘sporting gerrymandering’ over the scheduling which, he claimed, was to ‘satisfy’ Gaelic football players.
On Sunday, St Catherine’s team, boosted significantly by half-a-dozen players who had played in the Donegal senior football championship for Killybegs the previous weekend.

“Anyone who can see wood from trees can see what has happened,” Callaghan told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

We went out to play St Catherine’s and we have to take it. We were missing one guy because of Gaelic ironically enough. You should play when the game is fixed and I wasn’t going to look for this to be off.”

Goals by Niall Campbell and Ryan Cunningham, from a penalty, sealed survival for the Saints. There is no confirmation on when the new League season will start, but Callaghan says he won’t be staying in the hot seat.

He said: “A lot of boys aren’t happy with how it has been done. They are saying they’re not coming back. They’re at the age where they’re saying they couldn’t be bothered with that, they have a family life and a work life and it’s not worth being messed about like that.

“I put myself in the same bracket. I’ll not be too worried about next season because I’ll not be near it.”
