Listen: Gavin Cullen says Bonner strike was a ‘sucker punch’ for Cockhill

Gavin Cullen, the Cockhill Celtic player-manager, cut a frustrated figure after his team lost out to Finn Harps in the EA Sports Cup last night in Ballybofey.

Derek Doherty pulled the Ulster Senior League champions level after Jonny Bonner’s penalty put Harps in front. But a second from Bonner, just four minutes after Doherty’s strike, gave Harps the upper hand and Sean Houston added a third for the hosts.

“We were caught with a sucker-punch in Jonnny Bonner’s goal,” former Harps player Cullen said.

“We were well in the game and we were well on top in periods of the second half.

“It was either a great strike or poor goalkeeping, but it came just at the wrong time for us. It was a bad time to concede, just after we scored ourselves.

“I couldn’t ask the players for much more. We deserved the equaliser. If we hadn’t conceded that goal from Jonny, it could have been an interesting 15 or 20 minutes.”

Cockhill are back in USL action on Sunday when they welcome Letterkenny Rovers to the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds for a huge top-of-the-table clash.
