Listen: Gavin Cullen on ‘phenomenal’ Cockhill after latest USL triumph

Cockhill Celtic player-manager Gavin Cullen hailed his history-makers after their latest Ulster Senior League victory.

A 2-0 win over Finn Harps keeps the Four Lanterns USL title at the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds for a seventh season.

“To keep coming back and keep coming back is absolutely phenomenal,” Cullen told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub after goals by Peter Doherty and Gerry Gill delivered the goods against 10-man Harps, who had Lee McLaughlin sent off in the 14th minute.

“What can you say about it? You never set out to achieve something like that or think you can. You try to win the first one and see what happens.

“It’s a credit to those guys.”

Cockhill are champions for the eighth time in 10 seasons, but this current sequence stands alone in the annals.

“Honesty, integrity, good people and good footballers, who have a real desire not to lose games,” Cullen said of the secret to their success.

“You have good sides and good players, but they don’t have a winning mentality or a togetherness. It’s amazing.

“Everyone who has come in has stepped it up. Everyone gave their all and it’s unbelievable.

“We’ve had it tough this year. We went through a lot of players. There’s been a big turn over, which is tough. In my opinion this is our best.”
