Listen: Gavin Cullen hits out at ‘absolute nonsense’ talk on Cockhill

Gavin Cullen says any suggestion that Cockhill Celtic’s powers were waning was ‘absolute nonsense’.

Cockhill, the six-in-a-row champions of the Ulster Senior League, rose to the top of the standings yesterday thanks to a narrow 2-1 home win over Bonagee United.

Gerard McLaughlin and Malachy McDermott netted as Cullen’s men returned to the summit, three points ahead of Letterkenny Rovers, who they meet on Sunday in Letterkenny.

“We were there or thereabouts and we didn’t panic when other people were talking us down,” Cullen told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub after yesterday’s win.

“It was silly. We’ve lost one game this season, very dubiously, and one Cup game. It was absolute nonsense.

“Maybe people want to see us beaten.  It’s not nice to see a team dominate for so long and win so many things. It doesn’t help the other teams, but it’s great that this year is really competitive.”

McDermott headed home the winner after Deano Larkin cancelled out an early McLaughlin goal.

Cullen said: “It’s a fantastic result.

“It was a hard-fought game and no quarter given. We’re delighted with the result. We showed real character to get the win, but Bonagee deserved something.”
