Listen: Eamonn Collum bidding to make Gaoth Dobhair dreams come true

It was a mark of Eamonn Collum that he bounced back from a knee operation to become a key cog in Gaoth Dobhair’s wheel in 2018.

The Dunlewey man had the year of his dreams, winning Donegal and Ulster SFC crowns, having helped Gaoth Dobhair to Ulster U21 glory early in the year.

A knee injury had asked some searching questions, but he scored a goal in the Ulster U21 final win over Lavey at Creggan Kickhams.

“I was lucky to get back in,” Collum told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“Winning Ulster for the Under-21s was a turning point for me to put the shoulder to the wheel and nail a spot in the team.”

He did just that.

Collum featured heavily through the successful All-County League campaign and he came up with big moments in the Championship: He bagged 1-4 in the quarter-final hammering of Bundoran; registered 1-5 against MacCumhaills in the semi-final; and tucked over two frees against Naomh Conaill in the county final.

In Ulster, Collum helped himself to six points.

He said: If you look at the depth of the team, we have three or four men for the one spot and subs are just as good as the boys who are starting.”

Now, the dreams have become deeper. Corofin stand between Gaoth Dobhair and Croke Park.

He said: “Sitting back looking at Corofin last year, thinking about being there on Paddy’s Day in Croker – we’re only 60 minutes away now.”
