Listen: Delight for John Doherty as Illies wrap up First Division title

John Doherty heaped praise on his Illies Celtic after they captured the Strand Hotel Division One title today.

Michael Coyle netted four goals as Illies defeated Aileach Reserves 7-3 to take the title and confirm a passage back into the Premier Division.

Illies lost three of their opening four games, but a wonderful late rally has brought home the silverware.”

“We had a bad start in the League, but we got it together,” Doherty said.

“We lost our first two games and lost our fourth so it was a disaster of a start. We didn’t lose a home game at all so that helped us.

“We had to win our last six matches. That was a big ask, but they battled hard. We couldn’t slip up at all and we didn’t.”

After staving off the challenges of Clonmany Reserves and Moville Celtic, Illies are on the up again.

Doherty said: “It’s great to be back in the Premier Division. We’re opening our new pitch in July so it’ll be great to play Premier Division football on it.”
