Listen: Bonner pleased with young guns, but Sigerson saga overshadows win

DONEGAL manager Declan Bonner was pleased with the showing of his side’s young guns in last night’s McKenna Cup win over Derry.

Caolan Ward’s second-half goal helped earn a 1-10 to 0-8 win at Celtic Park.

While Bonner indicated that he would not be able to field a team for Sunday’s semi-final against Monaghan, owing to the large volume of players who are slated to have Sigerson Cup action for their colleges on Sunday, the Donegal boss was happy with last night’s win.

“The young lads coming into the squad are all showing pretty well,” Bonner told the assembled media.

“It was a good performance that sets us up for the semi-final.

“It was a good work-out. We had a lot of good performances and that’s good to build confidence in those players. As a group, I thought they did extremely well.

“We have a lot of new lads playing to the system. It can be difficult at times when they’re not used to it, but they have come in and showed a great attitude.”

However, the big talking point was certainly Bonner’s comments regarding the availability of players, which has thrown Sunday’s game into doubt.
