Listen: ‘The better team won’, admits Ollie Horgan, but penalty call irks Finn Harps boss

The Finn Harps manager, Ollie Horgan, felt that there was no way back for his side once Dundalk went 2-0 up and admitted his frustration as his side was denied a penalty at 1-0.

Harps fell to a 4-0 defeat at Oriel Park but Horgan was left to rue that moment, just after Robbie Benson’s fortunate opener, when Sean Houston went down under the challenge of Sean Gannon. Referee Ben Connolly waved play on and television replays showed that Houston had been fouled.

David McMillan, Patrick McEleney and Jamie McGrath all netted as Dundalk won comfortably in the end up.

“The better team won, without a doubt,” Horgan said.

“The only bone of contention we have was the penalty. If we’d lost 1-0, i’d be tearing my hair out. It was a stone wall penalty. It’s not an excuse. “I don’t think anyone in the ground felt it wasn’t a penalty.

“Possibly, if we’d got the penalty and got back to one-all, it might have been a different story but, from there to the end, Dundalk were excellent. We struggled football wise, physically and fitness wise. We frustrated them and we had a few half chances.

“Dundalk were by far the better team and I can only compliment them on the way they played and the shape they’re in. They can open anyone up. There was no way back after the second goal. It was curtains. You need a lot of luck up here and we didn’t have any of it.”
