The General Manager of Ballyliffin Golf Club, John Farren, says that the arrival of the 2018 Irish Open to the club is the ‘biggest thing to have happened Donegal in a longtime’.

Yesterday, Ballyliffin was confirmed as the venue for next summer’s Irish Open. At the 2017 version in Portstewart, a large delegation of club officials were present for the announcement.

“We’re absolutely delighted,” Farren said.

“This will really put Donegal on the map. It will be a massive boost for the local economy and will be a great showcase for Donegal. This is the biggest thing to have happened Donegal in a long time. It will be worth all the effort.

“This is a massive day for Donegal and we hope people will see the long-term benefits. We will put the north-west on the map.”

Farren also believes that 2018 being a Ryder Cup year could make the event even better,

He said: “Next year being a Ryder Cup year makes it more important to the world players. We’ll see a considerably stronger field next year.”
