Anthony Doherty says Aileach’s ‘courage’ saw them to a first-ever Ulster Junior Cup success yesterday.
The Aileach captain scored twice in a 4-2 win over Cavan Town at Dry Arch Park. Aileach were coasting at half-time, when they led 3-0, but Cavan hit back and made for a nervy finish, only for Doherty’s second goal, on 84 minutes, to seal the deal.
“Everybody will agree we were superb in the first half,” Doherty said.
“We blitzed them. We went at them. That killed us in the second half. We didn’t come out. They got the heads up and anything could have happened.
“You try to keep saying it’s nil-nil and we go again. We showed great character at the end up. The emphasis was with them at 3-2. We showed a lot of courage.”
Doherty hailed the influence of ex-Derry City midfielder Gareth McGlynn, whose appearance for the last 20 minutes was a calming influence on Aileach at a key stage.
And the Lakeside club – who are celebrating their 25th anniversary – have further chances of glory before the season’s end.
Doherty said: “It’s massive. Hopefully this is the start today.
“We have two more Cup finals and we have a chance of winning the League. We just have to keep it going.”
