Listen: AJ Gallagher bites back as Naomh Conaill defy the doubters

NAOMH Conaill full-back AJ Gallagher says the Glenties men’s belief never wavered as they toasted the return of Dr Maguire last night.

Gallagher kept Gaoth Dobhair ace Kevin Cassidy scoreless across the three instalments of the county final.

And the teak-tough full-back insisted that Naomh Conaill never lost faith in their own ability, even if most observers had billed them as the underdogs.

“Every year starting out, we feel that we have a Championship in us,” Gallagher said.

“We were written off on the back of losing in two finals. We were completely written off.”

Naomh Conaill have been in the house of pain since last lifting Dr Maguire in 2015, but last night’s 0-8 to 0-7 win ends their suffering.

Gallagher said: “It’s great to get over the line. We had two bad years, but it’s an unbelievable feeling to get over the line.

“The way it panned out, going to the three games and coming out on top, it’s unreal.”
