LETTERKENNY woman Caitriona Jennings is looking to break the World Athletics record for 100k today – while 12 weeks pregnant.

Jennings is taking part in the Project Carbon X2 event in Chandler, Arizona.

The event is staged by Hoka One One and starts and finishes at the Wild Horse Pass Motor Sports Parl.

The women’s 100k record is 6:33:11, which was set by Tomoe Abe of Japan back in 2000.

Abe set her record at the Lake Saroma 100k event in Hokkaido, Japan.

The 40-year-old holds the Irish 50km record of 3:19:47.

Despite being 12 weeks pregnant, the Hawthorn Heights native takes on today’s challenge alongside the likes of Camille Herron, Elov Olsson, Aiko Kanematsu and Yoshiki Otsuka.

“It wasn’t a decision I took lightly,” she said

“I think the water and ice on the course will help with hydration and keep my temperature down.”

Jennings competed in the women’s marathon at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
