Letterkenny twins give something back to alma mater

TWO FORMER ST EUNAN’S COLLEGE students have decided to put something back to their alma mater by sponsoring a kit for the team competing in the MacLarnon Cup.

Twins Patrick and Shaun McGinley from The Grange were members of the 2007 MacLarnon Cup winning St Eunan’s College team that included Michael Murphy.

They own and operate Drummeen Contracts with their logo (below) now emblazoned across the front of the jerseys.

On Tuesday evening in Garvaghey, St Eunan’s defeated Knock from Belfast 1-9 to 1-6 with Aaron Deeney netting the goal for James Gordon’s team, who have now advanced into the quarter-finals, which will take place in early 2016.

“Tuesday night was a very proud moment for myself and Shaun, seeing the college senior team wearing the jerseys that we sponsored,” Patrick McGinley told Donegal Sport Hub.

“We have always been active in giving back to the college down through the years and when we were told that the teams were still using jerseys from our time we were only too happy to step in

“I think back to the MacLarnon Cup Final in 2014 when in the moments after winning, team captain Conor O Donnell paid tribute to the guys that had come before him saying: ‘It’s like a dream. I’ve been dreaming about this since I started in first year. I remember Michael Murphy and them boys winning it in 2007 and that’s what we’ve been building towards.’

“That was great coming from a young man who in his moment of triumph stopped and paid tribute to those who had came before him.”

St Eunan’s opened this term’s MacLarnon campaign with a comfortable 3-13 to 0-6 win over St Joseph’s from Crossmaglen, with Ryan McLaughlin, Odhran McFadden and Niall O’Donnell getting the goals.

Against St Columb’s from Derry, they let a seven-point lead slip, but were content to get a draw. Conor Callaghan scored their goal on a day when they were all square 1-8 to 2-5, Caoimhin Marley arching over a late ’45 to rescue it.
