Letterkenny Golf Club notes – Persistence pays off for Kevin Rafferty

With the weather still so unpredictable, it is hard to get playing at all but one golfer whose persistence is paying off is Kevin Rafferty [6].

His winning scorecard from Wednesday 30th Open showed steady, mature golf with dropped shots at par three 5th [Inishowen], 9th hole [Crievesmith] and 17th [Aughaninshin] for a three over gross 75 and 39pts to pip runners-up Enda O’Donnell and Kevin Hannigan, both on 37pts.Michael Murphy Sports - jersey on sale now

Saturday 2nd April Open was won by another member whose dedication is also paying dividends early in the season as Sam Hegarty [19] once again proved the old adage of ‘practice makes perfect’.

Having been stumped by a double bogey at Hackett’s Best [6th], Sam’s birdie reply at par three 8th [Greenhills] was instantly dismissed by another double bogey at Crievesmith [9th], before a more consistent back nine recorded 22pts for an overall winning score of 41pts to outpoint the ‘form’ golfer at the moment, Kevin Hannigan [7] by one.

Kevin’s start of bogey-birdie had him take the turn on an average 18pts but birdies at Settlement [11th] and 17th just wasn’t enough having faltered at Candalabra [15th] with another bogey to leave him on 40pts.

Week-end competitions: The competition on Saturday will decide the male member who goes forward to represent the club alongside lady member Celine Bradley at the qualifying round of the Irish Open Pro-Am will be held on this Saturday, 9th April.

The member of the club with the best score will go forward to the qualifying round which will be held at Rockmount Golf club on Mon 11th April. There are 38 teams playing in the ‘North’ qualifier section at Rockmount GC, the top 3 teams of which will advance to the All Ireland Final (with teams for other sections) to be played on the Smurfit Course at the K Club in early May.

Sunday 10th April competition will be the first ‘major’ of the year, the club’s voucher competition.
Spaces are closing fast for both of these massive weekend competitions so members are advised to book their slot asap. Spaces are also closing fast for the Ladies organized Fundraising Classic Open which takes place on Friday 22nd April. Teams of four, any combination, €100 per team.

Congratulations to the club’s Fred Daly team who defeated near rivals Dunfanaghy GC. over two legs to proceed to the next round when they will play Malone GC.

Congratulations also to club member James Mc Fadden who finished runner-up in the Dunfanaghy Intermediate Scratch Cup last weekend.

Club Captain, Ivan Fuery, Lady Captain, Jacqueline Ireland, President Greg Sullivan, all club committees’ and members would like to welcome Seamus Mc Monagle as the club’s new PGA Professional.
