Letterkenny Golf Club gets special Tidy Towns award

Congratulations to Letterkenny Golf Club on receiving a special award from the Tidy Towns commissioners for the club’s approach to the environment and wildfowl habitat at Barnhill. Club Captain Gerard Duffy and club President Anne Condon collected the award on Monday night at the award ceremony held by the Letterkenny Tidy Towns committee at the Mount Errigal Hotel.

Congratulations also to club member Paddy Carberry on receiving his award from the committee for his continuous contribution to the Tidy Town campaign.

Wednesday 4th Open was won by cat 2 handicapper Darragh Heaney [12] with some impressive handicap golf.

Level two’s for first five holes, Darragh then ironed out back-to-back birdies at Hacketts Best [6th] and Ramsays Isle [7th] for an outward nine of 22pts and, continuing his steady play, recorded level two’s for seven of the inward nine holes accompanied by two three pointers for an overall return of 42pts to relegate Bobby Shields [18] to runner-up spot by virtue of B.O.T. Bobby was top of the leaderboard at the turn with 23pts but a few too many dropped shots on inward nine for a return of 19pts had him lose out on the countback.

Best gross on the day was recorded by Don Ponsonby [5] with 32 gross points.

Saturday 7th Open competition, played in extraordinary calm and higher than normal temperatures for this time of year, was convincingly won by cat 4 handicapper John Bradley [28]. With 23pts on front nine and ‘putting’ his way home, ‘blanks’ at Sheep Hill [12th] and Aughaninshin [17th] almost cost him but a 20pt finish was enough to give him the win on 43pts. Coming a close second was Ulster Cup team captain Charlie Coughlan [13] albeit on a B.O.T. From fellow cat 3 member Michael Nelis [13].

With birdies on both nines recorded at Sliabh Sneacht [4th] and Settlement [11th], Charlie’s inward nine saw him through on the countback when Michael, despite birdies at Swilly [3rd] and 7th holes, lost out with that double bogey at 17th.

Gross prize was won by Eamon McGlinchey [6] returning 38 shots each nine for 32 gross points.
