Letterkenny Gaels defeat Downings to advance to U-21B quarter-final

LETTERKENNY GAELS ADVANCED to the quarter final of the Under 21 B Championship after defeating Downings at Pairc na nGael on Wednesday evening.

Cormac Cannon got the home side off the mark with a free in the third minute. Downings full forward Lorcan Connor replied with a free in the eigtht minute.

Paddy Doherty, Shay Doherty and a Shane Graham 45 stretched the Gaels lead before Connors responded with a free in the 17th minute.

Corner back Cahir Doherty pointed for Gaels in the 18th minute after some excellent play, before Connor pointed another free for the visitors on 20 minutes. Gaels finished out the half with further scores from Shay Doherty (2), Donal O’Malley and Cormac Cannon to give the home side a 0-9 to 003 lead at half time.

Shay Doherty continued with an early point in the second half before Downings midfielder James McBride converted. Paddy Doherty continued his dominance in midfield with two fine scores for the hosts by the 40th minute.

Downings rallied with two scores through Martin Cullen and Kevin Doherty and Gaels keeper Graham was called up again to convert another ’45.

Sub Calvin Holian increased Gaels lead to seven points by the end of the third quarter. Gaels were punished for giving away possession in the 16th minute and full forward Connor finished to the net to give the visitors hope.

O’Malley knocked over for the home side but Downings fought back with a Connor’s point on 22 metres, a free on 27 minutes and another Cullen score on 31 minutes to leave a goal between the teams. However Shay Doherty knocked over the insurance score for Gaels on 32 minutes to put Gaels through to the next round.
