Lecky targets some sort of summer after return to action

SOMMER Lecky cleared 1.75m on her return action after almost six months out of competition this afternoon.

The Finn Valley AC high jumper won the women’s high jump event the Irish Life Health Elite Micro Meet at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena.

Lecky has worked hard over lockdown to keep her levels and the 2018 World Under-20 silver medalist was delighted to get back into a competition.

“It’s not been too bad,” Lecky said.

Not much has changed for me.

“i was able to get to the track and I have bits of my own gym so I was quite lucky.

“It’s good to even get back competing again. It’s been a long time – the Irish seniors outdoors was the last time. It was good to break up training and get some competition.”

Lecky was the Irish women’s gold medalist at the start of September and would be in line for the European Under-23s later in 2021, with a 1.81m leap needed to qualify. Lecky’s personal best is the 1.90m she leapt in Tampere for her World silver three years ago.

She said: “I’m playing it by ear now. I’ll keep training and hope there is an outdoor season to look forward to.

“I just want to keep jumping higher.”

Mark English and James Kelly are also in action this afternoon.
