Last gasp PJ Barr goals seals win for Moville Celtic against Illies

MOVILLE CELTIC WON OUT by the odd goal in five against Illies Celtic in the Clubman Shirts League Cup quarter-final this afternoon.

Illies Celtic 2-3 Moville Celtic

A PJ Barr goal a minute from time sealed the victory in an entertaining contest for Moville (pictured above), when he tucked past Johnny Noone following good approach play from substitute Sean Doherty, who beat two defenders to square the vital pass.

It was a contest that could’ve gone either way. The home side scored the opening goal on nine minutes when Michael Doherty’s cross was misjudged by goalkeeper Sean McGuinness and flew straight in.

The lead was short-lived though, as just two minutes later the teams were level.

Following a through ball from Conor Lafferty, Moville’s Conor Doherty was taken down in the area by goalkeeper Noone. Doherty brushed himself down to make it 1-1 from the penalty spot.

Chances came and went at both ends but it took until the 57th minute for another goal. It came when a loos back pass from Stephen Grant of Illies was seized upon by Ciaran Diver, who rounded McGuinness to score.

However, it was soon 2-2 when, on 75 minutes, a bullet header from Grant – atoning for his previous error – from a corner by Martin Coyle corner.

Illies were denied the lead hen when McGuinness made a superb save to deny Paddy Doherty and with only a minute to go, Moville posted the winner through Barr to seal a last four berth.

Illies Celtic: Johnny Noone; Michael Doherty (Ryan McElhinney 90), Dominic Doherty, William McLaughlin, John Campbell; John Donaghy, Kevin McGonagle (Shane Devlin 72), Dominic Coyle, Martin Coyle; Paddy Donaghy, Stephen Grant.

Moville Celtic: Sean McGuinness; John Gillen Mark Henry, Graeme Doherty, Jack Keys; Conor Doherty, Charlie Gill, PJ Barr, Christy Smyth (Jordan McLaughlin 62); Conor Lafferty (Sean Doherty 80), Ciaran Diver.
