Kogler’s eye on Premier survival after Cup heroics for Harps

TWO-GOAL Alexander Kogler insists Finn Harps’ full focus is now on Premier Division survival – after blasting his side into the FAI Cup quarter-finals.

By Chris McNulty at The Carlisle Grounds

The Austrian striker (pictured by Joe Boland, North West Newspix) headed two first half goals last night as Harps defeated ten-man Bray Wanderers 2-0 at the Carlisle Grounds to secure a last eight berth in the Cup.

The latter rounds of the Cup won’t be played until November, when the League season will have finished.

For now, Harps – who sit ninth on goal difference with only Cork City beneath them – will battle for their top flight safety.

“Every game is huge, especially for us,” Kogler said.

“We are looking forward now and we will train hard. We are starting to get more points in the next few games.

“I’m starting to look forward to the next few games now. It’s important that we collect more points in the League. That should be our goal now.

“It is game by game and I don’t think too much of the other games. The next game is in the League and it’s a very important game.”

Harps’ next assignment is a north-west derby at Sligo Rovers on Monday-week, before Derry City visit Finn Park the following Sunday.

Kogler said: “Now we can look forward to the important league games and focus on them.

“Winning makes the confidence bigger. It makes us happy and we take the win with us.”

Last night’s seaside double made it three goals in two games for Kogler, who was recruited to Harps in February, just before the Covid-19 lockdown.

Last weekend, the 6’3” hitman scored one of the late goals as Harps defatted Waterford 3-2 in the League.

His brace of headers against Bray – who had Paul Keegan sent off early in the second half – has now shot Ollie Horgan’s team into the quarter-finals.

He said: “It was a very tough game. The whole team is happy that we won this game.

“I am happy for the goals. We are all happy.”
