A KEY GAME in Division 1 of the All-County Football League was called off this afternoon as no referee showed up for the appointed throw-in time.
Players from Gaoth Dobhair and Sean MacCumhaills had warmed up and were ready for their clash in Maghergallon.
It was a must-win game for Sean MacCumhaills, who needed to win to avoid being relegated from the top flight.
The referee listed on the official Donegal GAA website for the game was Greg McGroary, who took charge of today’s earlier game between Milford and Kilcar at Moyle View Park.
The Gaoth Dobhair-Sean MacCumhaills game was down to begin at 3pm.
Leo Devenney refereed the reserve game between the teams, but was unable to remain at the venue for the senior game.
By 4pm, after a frantic series of phone calls, and with no referee at the venue, the Sean MacCumhaills players had boarded the team bus and were on their way back home.
At around 4.15pm, referee Enda McFeely arrived at Magheragallon, but by that stage the traveling party had left. McFeely had been at The Bridge for the St Michael’s-Glenswilly game, but that fixture was refereed by Seamus McGonagle.
With games set for next weekend in Division 1 and with the 2019 Donegal senior football championship to begin the following weekend, it remains to be seen what will be done with this fixture.
