Just TWO votes in our final Sports Person of the Week poll of 2018!

There were only TWO votes separating the top two in our final Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub Sports Person of the Week, in association with O’Reilly’s, award of 2018.

Mulroy College goalkeeper Clare Friel was the narrow winner, claiming 447 votes of the 1,077 that were cast.

Friel was just two votes ahead of Gaeil Fhanada minor star Bernard McGettigan, who claimed 445 votes.

The two were neck-and-neck all morning, with a surge of votes for both right up to the 12 noon deadline. At one stage, the voting was so intense the polling system was feeling the pressure.

Mulroy College overcame Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair last week to retain their Ulster senior school’s title.

A narrow 1-0 win away from home gave Mulroy the precious win to put them at the All-Ireland semi-final stage again. Goalkeeper Friel kept a clean sheet in trying conditions and had her side supremely organised as she proudly captained her school to glory.

Each weekly award winner will receive a kitbag, a jersey and a half-zip, supplied by O’Reilly’s.

O’Reilly’s Sportswear was founded in 2017 by well-known Twin Towns sporting brothers Steven and Martin O’Reilly.
