Jeffrey hails Shane McGinty return as Ballymena set new club record

Ballymena United manager David Jeffrey praised Shane McGinty, who returned from injury this afternoon as the Sky Blues maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

A 2-0 win over Ards at The Showgrounds means Ballymena are four points clear of Linfield at the top of the pile – and their 17-game unbeaten run is a new club record.

McGinty, a summer signing from Ballinamallard United, has been kicking his heels on the side-lines since early September after picking up a serious groin injury.

Today, the St Johnston man came in for his first appearance in 15 weeks to make his home debut, replacing Andrew Burns for the final 15 minutes.

“Shane’s inclusion today was testimony to his own hard work,” Jeffrey said.

“He had a serious injury and he has had to work and work. We never brought him to play wing back but Andrew Burns hasn’t had game time and we thought it was time to give him minutes. He did really well.

“It’s lovely to have a number of players back available this time of year because games are coming thick and fast.”

First-half goals from Leeroy Millar and Jude Winchester fired Ballymena to the win, while Winchester and James Knowles both saw penalties saved.
