CHLOE MCDAID TOOK AN Irish title – and a slice of history – back to Illies Golden Gloves last night.

At the National Girls finals, McDaid scooped her first Irish crown in fine style.

McDaid overcame Sinainn Glynn from Cloghan, County Offaly, in the Girl 3 50kgs final at the National Stadium.

The leap of joy at the end told the story in a picture as the announcer confirmed that the winner of the title was the Buncrana woman in the red corner.

Crana College student McDaid took the win on a split decision.

Glynn edged the opening round, but McDaid hit back to claim the next two stanzas.

It was all to play for heading into the decisive last round, but McDaid shone to claim a excellent victory.

In winning, McDaid becomes the first female from the Illies Golden Gloves club to win an Irish title and her triumph is the Buncrana club’s 36th Irish crown in total.

It has been quite a few weeks for McDaid.

After winning her third Ulster title, when she defeated Morgan McNulty from Rathfirland, at the Illies clubrooms, she defeated the same boxer again in the Irish semi-final last weekend.

There was no joy for Twin Towns BC’s Aine Gallagher, who was stopped in the first round of the Girl 3 39kgs final by Fiona O’Keefe from Rathkeale.
