Injury woe for Gillespie as Gaoth Dobhair suffer double blow

Kieran Gillespie’s season is over after the Gaoth Dobhair and Donegal defender suffered his latest injury set-back on Sunday.

Gillespie was forced off at half-time in Sunday’s drawn Donegal SFC final against Naomh Conaill and his replacement, Christopher McFadden, is also facing a lengthy absence after he, too, picked up a knee injury.

The player had just returned to action after a long lay-off following a cruciate injury last winter.

The news comes as a hammer blow to Gaoth Dobhair ahead of this weekend’s SFC final replay and also to Donegal, with Declan Bonner having been excited about Gillespie’s return to his squad.

Last November, Gillespie suffered a cruciate injury in Gaoth Dobhair’s Ulster club SFC game against Erin’s Own at Corrigan Park.

Gillespie went down in the opening seconds of that game and was stretchered off.

Gillespie had to have two corrective procedures on hip injuries in 2017.

The experienced McFadden lasted only six minutes as he was also forced off. He, too, is believed to have suffered a serious knee injury.
