DEFENDING champions Glengad United sent out an emphatic notice of their intent to retain the Jackie Crossan Premier Division title with an 8-1 hammering of Greencastle at Chapel Lane on Sunday.

JACKIE CROSSAN PREMIER DIVISION

 Greencastle FC 1-8 Glengad United

GLENGAD served notice of their intention to retain their title with an emphatic victory over premier new boys Greencastle.

On five minutes after Greencastle lost possession Terence Doherty crossed and in the scramble Nigel McMonagle poked home.

Doherty then added a second when he cut in from the right and curled a superb effort past JP O Doherty.

It became three-nil on 17 minutes when Doherty sprung the offside trap and raced clear before squaring to Patrick McDermott to steer the ball home.

Greencastle steadied the ship and got a goal back on 42 minutes when Ciaran Moore beat two defenders before advancing into the area and drilling a low shot past Michael McLaughlin.

They were dealt a body blow on the stroke of half time with the dismissal of Gerry Gill for a second yellow card.

Greencastle battled hard but on the hour fell further behind when Stephen McLaughlin curled a superb free kick around the wall and into the bottom corner.

McDermott added his second and Glengad ‘s fifth on 75 minutes when he advanced from midfield and fired low to the corner from the edge of the area.

On 80 minutes Doherty broke into the area and when his effort was parried by O’Doherty the loose ball was slotted home by John McDaid. In the closing minutes Terence Doherty added two goals beating the offside on both occasions before slotting past O’Doherty to complete his hat trick.

Buncrana Hearts 3-0 Culdaff FC

THERE was little in the opening half and the visitors had the first effort when Noel Mclaughlin flashed an effort just past the post.

Midway through the half Buncrana were unlucky when Harry Forshaw unleashed a twenty five yards effort which beat Darragh McLaughlin but crashed back off the post.

Before the break the Hearts had another effort when Adam Callaghan unleashed an effort on the run but it sailed over the bar.

The introduction of Stephen McHugh before the hour mark turned the game as on the hour he flicked on for Bart Wesoloski to run clear and dink the ball over McLaughlin.

On 70 minutes James McGonagle fed McHugh inside the area and he twisted and turned before poking the ball home from close range. They sealed the points at 78 minutes when McHugh released Kevin O’Loughlin on the left and he found McGonagle who fired low across McLaughlin to the far corner.

Moville Celtic 0-9 Clonmany Shamrocks

MOVILLE had the first opportunity when Shaun Doherty saw a header cleared by a defender.

Clonmany replied and a diagonal ball from Jason Doherty to Jason Devlin saw the latter cross to Jamie Coyle to poke home.

In the 14th minute Coyle beat the offside trap to race clear and slot past Sean McGuinness before midway through the half Jason Doherty flashed a half volley from ten yards high to the net.

Moville responded with Gordon Martin seeing a flying header crash off the post before the same player had a shot held by Patrick Harkin.

Two goals within three minutes of the restart killed the game as a contest. In the opening minute of the second half substitute Niall McLaughlin released Jason Doherty to slot the ball home before minutes later Jason Doherty outpaced the home defence to finish well.

On 54 minutes Reddin released Conor Doherty but Harkin was equal to that effort while at the other end McGuinness saved well to deny both Doherty and McLaughlin. On 59 minutes Coyle collected a throw in and turned his man easily before slotting past McGuinness to complete his hat trick.

Jason Devlin added two more goals after Michael Devlin had squared to him on both occasions. In a rare second half burst Shaun Doherty’s twenty five yards free was well saved by Harkin at full stretch.

Moville completed the scoring when Jason Devlin fed Michael Devlin to loop the ball over McGuinness.

Aileach FC 0-1 QPS

AILEACH started the brighter and should have taken the lead in the 10th minute when Anthony Doherty’s cross was headed over by Caoimhin McFeely.

The point’s first chance of note came midway through the first half when Odhran McColgan’s header went just wide of David McGeady’s post.

The best chance of the first half fell to Gavin Doherty who got through on an one-on-one but ‘keeper Jordan McLaughlin saved smartly to keep the sides scoreless at half time.

In the opening minute of the first half Denim McLaughlin struck a free kick towards the top corner but David McGeady pushed it wide for a corner.

The Point took the lead on the hour mark when a defensive mix-up resulted in Karl Donnelly poking the ball past McGeady and into the unguarded net.

The game got bogged down in midfield for a period with both sides creating few chances.

The Point almost doubled their lead with ten minutes to go when Karl Donnelly’s cross reached Bob Buchannan at the back post but Damien Barr got in a vital block.

Aileach pressed for an equaliser in the latter stages but a combination of good defending and poor delivery meant the point claimed all three points.

STRAND HOTEL FIRST DIVISION

Cockhill Youths 2-1 Carrowmena FC

COCKHILL Youths got off to a dream start in the first minute when Joe Doherty picked up on a loose ball in the penalty area after Michael Coyle had done well on the left wing to give the home team an early lead.

On the half hour mark Carromena broke through from a loose Cockhill ball and Billy McCann shot when one on one was well saved by Decky Caldwell.

Shortly after this Marty Doherty was brought down in the box and he scored the resultant penalty to give Cockhill a two-nil lead.

Some late pressure from Carromena before half time saw Raymond Campbell meet two corners in quick succession with his head the first of which Caldwell tipped over.

The second half started in the same manner as most of the first was played with the home team having the majority of the play and the opposition sitting deep, an early chance saw Joe Doherty chip the ball in to Mark Moran on the six yard line but Ruari Dougal cleared a definite goal scoring opportunity.

Mark Moran had a number of further chances and Darragh McDermott who had come on as a second half substitute was finding good space on the right wing but was unable to make the chances count.

Carrowmena were still holding out and breaking when they could, as the match entered the last quarter, Billy McCann found himself in a similar one on one to the chance in the first but with the same result as the Cockhill keeper saved well.

Cockhill kept pressing for a third and decisive goal with Darragh McDermott and Joe Doherty causing havoc and needing at least one goalmouth clearance.

Mickey Gallagher’s looping cross from the right wing nearly sneaked in at the back post but for the Carromena’s keepers quick response.

With five minutes to go Carromena setup a thrilling end when a cross in from the left was met by Killian Dougal to score with a header, but there was to be no more goals as Cockhill seen out the remainder of the game to earn the three points.

Rasheney FC 4-3 Dunree United

IN the early exchanges the visitors Henry Connolly had an effort blocked while at the other end Declan McLaughlin flashed a dangerous cross across the face of goal but there were no takers.

On 15 minutes Rasheney opened the scoring when Damien Friel controlled well and unleashed a superb twenty two yards effort low into the corner past Paul McGettigan.

Dunree replied well with Connolly firing narrowly over before Jerry Farrell swivelled well on the edge of the area and his effort was brilliantly clawed away by Tiernan Devine.

Dunree pressure told on 28 minutes when they got back on terms after Devind palmed away a Farrell cross to Sean Doherty who turned and fired low to the net.

Doherty went close again minutes later after his glancing header from a Darryl Moran cross flashed inches wide.

Rasheney spurned a golden opportunity when McGettigan palmed a Declan McLaughlin effort to Johnathan Toland but he scooped the ball over the bar from six yards.

Rasheney regained the lead before the break when for the second week running Friel fired a superb free kick around the wall and into the bottom corner.

They got a dream start to the second half as well when the visitors defence failed to deal with a long clearance and McLaughlin took advantage to slide the ball home.

Dunree went close but a Connolly header was cleared off the line before at the other end McGettigan’s punched clearance came off the head of McLaughlin and into the net to make it four one.

Dunree upped the tempo with substitute Conor Doherty shooting at Devine from twenty yards before Connolly got a goal back after a neat one two with Liam Baldrick before he drove low to the corner.

Jerry Farrell delivered a superb low cross but Kevin McColgan just failed to connect when in front of goal.

A superb Farrell diagonal ball then found McColgan on 89 minutes and he cut in before shooting low to the corner but the home defence weathered the final flurry.

Redcastle United 0-4 Carn FC

CARN ran out easy winners in the end against a Redcastle side who failed to register a significant shot on target throughout the ninety minutes.

The visitors had early opportunities through full back Mark Doherty and Darragh Deery, but Michael Mc Cole collected both efforts.

Carn were awarded a penalty soon and Robert McCartney saw his effort saved by McCole.

Brandon Brown had the last chance of the half for Carn, when McCole collected his effort for the edge of the box.

Within ten minutes of the second half Carn were two goals up, first through a close range Brandon Brown shot and then when Brown played in Doherty to slot home.

As the game progressed the home side had half chances through Colm Mc Laughlin and Gary

Kelly, but it was the away team who found the net again through Brown’s curling effort from the left hand side of the area.

The visitors ended the game as a contest on 83 minutes when Darragh Deery won the ball on the edge of the box and advanced on Mc Cole to tuck home.
