CLUBMAN SHIRTS LEAGUE CUP

TUESDAY

Cockhill Celtic Youths 0-2 Illies Celtic

COCKHILL Celtic Youths kicked of their first competitive home game of the season against neighbours Illies Celtic, with the away team putting early pressure on the Cockhill defence resulting in a number of corners but with no breakthrough.

Cockhill then gained the upper hand and good combination work in their midfield allowed Darragh McDermott to find space up front and called the Illies keeper Jonathan Noone in to action with two shots on goal.

Christy McLaughlin worked a shot that was just wide while Joe Doherty’s shot was tipped around the post.

The first chance of the second half fell to Illies Marty Coyle, who found himself with an open goal but failed to hit the target.

This spurned Cockhill on and James O’Donnell combined well with McLaughlin to create openings that Cockhill failed to convert.

On the hour mark Illies took the lead from a corner that wasn’t cleared, William McLaughlin got the final goal bound touch,.

With 10 minutes to go Illies were awarded a freekick just inside the Cockhill half.

A speculative high ball in to the box was picked up by Paddy Doherty at the back

post to score and give Illies a 2-0 lead.

Redcastle United 1-1 Carn FC

A DRAW was probably a fair result in this evenly matched affair.

Matthew McLaughlin was first to threaten for the visitors when his header was touched over by McCole in the home goal.

Kevin Doran then played in Colm McLaughlin for the home side but Daniel Houghton in the Carn goal came out well to make the save.

Robert McLaughlin almost opened the scoring for Carn from a free kick, but McCole collected at the second attempt.

Redcastle did open the scoring on 35 minutes when Harry McCormack controlled the ball and fired a dipping shot over Houghton to the net from thirty five yards.

Redcastle started the second half on the front foot and Houghton had to be alert to push an effort from Cathal Crumlish round the post.

As the half progressed Carn came more into the game, Declan McGonagle shot straight at McCole before Matthew McLaughlin had a free kick easily dealt with by the Redcastle keeper.

On 83 minutes Carn got back on terms when Mc Gonagle’s deep cross from the right was turned home by Shane Doherty at the back post.

FRIDAY

Illies Celtic 1-3 Aileach FC

IN good conditions Illies started well but Paddy Doherty saw one effort rebound off the post before Shane Devlin burst through the middle and was unlucky to see his effort crash back off the bar.

Against the run of play Aileach broke and Anthony Doherty fed Paddy Slevin who fired past Johnathan Noone from twelve yards.

Five minutes later it was two nil after Slevin beat two defenders and slotted low past Noone.

Illies got a lifeline on the stroke of half time when Martin Coyle fed Kevin McGonagle who crossed to Dominic Coyle. His effort was parried by David McGeady, but the loose ball was knocked home by Paddy Doherty.

Aileach dominated the second period with Gavin Doherty twice denied by fine saves from Noone before Anthony Doherty blazed over when well placed.

Illies had half a chance midway through the half when Paddy Doherty burst into the area but his effort was scrambled clear.

Aileach sealed the points on 83 minutes when a deep deliver from a Dermot Doherty corner was steered home by Anthony Doherty.

Carrowmena FC 0-9 Cockhill Celtic Youths

COCKHILL got a dream start when Michael Coyle stabbed home after the home defence failed to clear.

In another scramble on 12 minutes Declan Kearney rounded keeper Kyle Dougal to fire home.

Carrowmena responded and both Kevin Toner and Billy McCann clipped the woodwork with good efforts.

Coyle added a third when he beat two defenders before rounding Dougal to slot home.

He completed his hat-trick when he despatched a free kick from the edge of the area to the top corner.

Joe Doherty was then denied by an excellent save from Dougal before at the other end dane Doherty had a clear sight of goal but fired at Declan Caldwell.

Coyle scored with another superb free kick on 55 minutes to make it 5-0 before Darragh McDermott and Sean P Fullerton got in on the act.

Two late goals from Ronan McLaughlin completed the scoring.

Carn FC 2-5 Buncrana Hearts

BUNCRANA had the better of the opening period and opened the scoring on 21 minutes when the ball fell inside the area to James McGonagle who calmly fired past Daniel Houghton.

Houghton produced a number of good saves to deny Liam McCarron, McGonagle and Lee Sean Doherty as the half ended.

Buncrana upped the tempo and on 50 minutes McCarron powered a header high past McGonigle.

Lee Sean Doherty then made it 3-0 when he unleashed a 20-yard effort low to the corner before substitute Stephen McHugh beat two defenders and scored with a superb chip.

Carn reduced the deficit on 75 minutes when a Jason Davis shot deflected off a defender and past Mark McGonigle.

McGonigle parried a Robert McCartney header from a corner and Darragh Deery reacted well to slot home.

An altercation developed as Carn tried to retrieve the ball and keeper McGonigle was red carded in the melee. McHugh killed off any notions of a comeback with a stunning volley.

Redcastle United 0-3 Clonmany Shamrocks

CLONMANY went ahead on 15 minutes when Jason Doherty collected a clearance

from a Redcastle corner and out-paced the home defence to fire low to the net.

Clonmany increased their lead on the half hour when Aaron Harkin lobbed the ‘keeper from all of 40 yards.

Redcastle responded through Cathal Crumlish, but his shot was easily dealt with by Harkin.

On 75 minutes the home side had a good opportunity to get back in the game but Harkin came out smartly to deny Darragh McConway.

Clonmany made sure of the points late on when Mc Cole parried a Jason Doherty cross into the path of Jamie Coyle, who tapped home from close range.

QPS 3-0 Culdaff FC

WITH both teams already through from the group there was little action in the opening period.

Culdaff threatened first after Darren Mullarkey advanced and crossed from the left for Matthew Crampsey to unleash an effort but Jordan McLaughlin was equal to it.

The Point upped the tempo with Denim McLaughlin seeing an effort saved by Darragh McLaughlin before Karl Donnelly controlled a ball over the top but fired at McLaughlin.

Before the break Oisin McCool had an effort saved before their best chance fell to Stephen McCarron whose low effort was touched around the post at full stretch by McLaughlin.

The Point made the break through on 49 minutes when a Donnelly shot from the edge of the area broke off a defender to McCarron whose effort across goal was slotted home by Eamon Gallagher from five yards.

On 57 minutes they doubled their lead when McCool’s cross was controlled by Donnelly before he slotted low to the corner.

Donnelly raced onto a Paul Grant flick but fired wide when well placed before they sealed the points when Denim McLaughlin despatched a penalty to the top corner awarded for hand ball.

Moville Celtic 2-1 Greencastle FC

GREENCASTLE started brightest when Matthew Henry burst down the left firing in a dangerous cross which Ronan Doherty managed to connect with from six yards but home keeper Sean McGuinness saved.

Moville took the lead when Sean Doherty gained possession in midfield feeding Kevin McDermott on the right wing. His low shot was parried by Greencastle ‘keeper JP O’Doherty, only for Conor Doherty to side-foot into an empty net from five yards.

In the 13th minute Doherty attempted a snapshot on the turn from twenty yards but McGuinness held well.

McGuinness was on hand again in the 24th minute to hold a Jamie McCormick drive from 30 yards as Greencastle tried to find an equaliser.

Moville broke with a McDermott through ball to Conor Doherty on the left. Doherty cut inside his marker only to fire over from the angle of the box.

On the stroke of half time Moville went two up as Doherty did exactly the same thing as before only to find his low shot completely misjudged by O’Doherty.

The ball slipped past him to deflect off the far post and in.

Early in the second half Greencastle’s Michael Barr had an effort which deflected off a Moville defender falling straight to Doherty but his shot from 15 yards was easily held by the Moville ‘keeper.

The visitors reduced the deficit in the 68th minute when James Henry caught the home side out with a quickly taken free kick out to substitute Ciaran Moore on the left. He passed to Michael Henry in the home area whose low angled drive beat McGuinness to find the far bottom corner of the net.

Rasheney FC 0-5 Glengad United

GLENGAD secured their place in the quarter finals of the league cup with this deserved win over Rasheney on Friday night.

Nigel McMonagle had an early shot well saved by Tiernan Devine but on five minutes McMonagle received a pass from Patrick McDermott on the left hand side of the area and drilled a low shot to the corner.

Glengad increased their lead when Matthew Byrne fed Terence Doherty who hammered home from just inside the area.

At the other end a Damien Friel free eluded the Glengad defence and was collected by David McLaughlin but Kevin McLaughlin advanced to clear.

Glengad replied and McDermott broke into the area but Devine smothered.

Play swung to the other end and Anthony McEleney saw a shot saved by McLaughlin whose quick clearance was controlled by Nigel McMonagle who fed McDermott to slot home.

Glengad dominated the second period with Terence Doherty seeing a scooped effort rebound off the bar before the same player somehow fired across goal and wide when well placed.

Byrne was then denied by a superb Emyln Doherty interception before Doherty had an effort crash off the post and Christopher Mclaughlin saw an effort saved by Devine.

A good run by Stephen McLaughlin on 77 minutes saw him fire low into the corner from twenty yards.

Five minutes later they completed the scoring when McDermott beat the offside trap to race clear and round Devine to slot home.

DONEGAL SIGNS RESERVE LEAGUE SHIELD

Clonmany Reserves 2-2 Sea Rovers

JUST four minutes in, Sea Rovers took the lead after a Keelan Doherty corner from the left saw Matthew Harley rise above the Clonmany defenders to head to the net past Diarmuid Moyne.

Clonmany took a while to settle after this and mounted their first attack after 13 minutes when Paddy Doherty’s lofted ball over the Sea Rovers defence was controlled by Oisin Hession but Sea Rovers keeper Glen Watson was quickly out to claim the ball.

Clonmany had another chance to equalise with 24 minutes gone when Conor Doherty looped a ball to the left hand side of the Sea Rovers box for Karl Harkin, and he drew Glen Watson from his line before side footing goalwards. Daniel Glackin got back in time to prevent the ball from crossing the goal line and he cleared to safety.

Clonmany’s pressure finally paid off in the 29th minute when Brendan Doherty won a free kick wide on the left wing. He took it himself and his delivery into the box was met perfectly by Oisin Hession’s glancing header which went inside Watson’s right hand post.

Sea Rovers almost caught Clonmany with a similar goal in the 33rd minute when after being awarded a free kick in their own half the long punt upfield was headed on by Ben Lafferty but with Moyne stranded the ball hit the left hand post and went behind for a kick out.

In the dying moments of the first half Declan Grant was played through on goal after good hold up work by Karl Harkin on halfway but Watson came out quickly and Declan’s shot was off target.

The second half was not as free flowing as the first with Sea rovers making three changes within the opening 20 minutes of the period.

Clonmany still were having the greater share of possession but were finding it tough to break down a resolute Sea Rovers defence which had been joined by second half substitute Gerard McEleney.

When eventually they did manage to break through as on 69minutes when Aaron Harkin broke through from right back Sea Rovers were able to call on Watson and on this occasion he made a double save from Harkin before the ball broke to the edge of the box but Declan Grant’s shot went over the bar.

Clonmany’s best move of the match came with 77 minutes gone when Brendan Doherty got to the left side of the box and floated in a hanging cross which was met perfectly by Karl Harkin but his header scraped the crossbar and went behind.

Sea Rovers made Clonmany pay for these missed chances in the 79th minute when a free kick taken from their own half found Ben Lafferty in the box and while his shot from ten yards out was blocked by Diarmuid Moyne , Matthew Harley was on hand to steer the rebound to the net.

Clonmany pushed everyone up for the final ten minutes and their persistence finally paid off deep into stoppage time when Brendan Doherty and Paddy Doherty combined to set Declan Grant through one on one with Glen Watson.

Again Watson made a telling block but the ball spun to the feet of Clonmany’s Andy Doherty who had vacated his centre-half berth and he gleefully steered the ball into the net to salvage a point.

Cockhill Colts 3-3 Carn Reserves

COCKHILL started this game the better with Thomas Doherty firing wide when well placed before Gary Breslin fired wide from the edge of the area.

Against the run of play Carn took the lead on 27 minutes when a defensive error allowed Cade Cooke to drill past Adam McLaughlin.

Colts replied with Kevin McDaid firing low to the bottom corner from twenty five yards within two minutes.

Breslin went close then with an effort which crashed off the post before on 43 minutes Doherty fed Breslin and he clinically fired to the top corner from the edge of the area.

They continued to press and on 63 minutes looked to have sealed the points when Mark Gillespie split the Carn defence with a superb pass to McDaid who fired low to the corner from fifteen yards.

On 80 minutes another defensive error allowed Cooke to slot home from ten yards. Carn gained a share of the spoils when a Cooke effort from twenty five yards deceived McLaughlin and completed his hat trick.

Gleneely Colts 3-3 Redcastle Reserves

AFTER an even opening to the game the home side took the lead when Neil G Duffy fired home after a corner broke to him.

They made it 2-0 on 37 minutes when Nathan McLaughlin fed Evan O’Brien who fired to the corner from 16 yards.

Redcastle started the second period well and got a goal back when Michael Bonner pounced on a loose ball to drive past Mark Lafferty in the home goal.

Midway through the half the Colts restored their two goal cushion when Pete Bond and John Paul Lafferty played a neat one two for Bond to fire low to the corner. But immediately from the kick off Seamus Farren wind assisted effort caught Lafferty off his line and reduced the deficit. The visitors made it three all when a corner deflected off a defender past Lafferty on 79 minutes. Redcastle almost took the lead when Bonner’s effort crashed off the post. But The colts went as close late on when Nathan McLaughlin also saw a shot crash off the post before Adrian Duffy’s late snapshot also crashed off the bar.
