Impressive Mona McSharry sets new school record and grabs medal haul

written by Chris McNulty February 21, 2021

MONA McSharry’s star continues to burn with the former Marlin’s swimmer setting a new school record and leaving the 2021 Women’s SEC Swimming and Diving Championships with four medals.

McSharry turned in a school record of 57.82 seconds to take silver in the 100m breaststroke.

The University of Tennessee freshman, McSharry stole the night for the ‘Lady Vols’.

Her time surpassed the previous best of 58.22 seconds, set by Olympian Molly Hannis.

“I keep hitting on Mona’s professionalism,” associate head coach Ashley Jahn said.

“But the year as a whole has been a challenge for everybody, but the one thing that great competitors do is take every opportunity as an opportunity to get better. That’s what she did tonight.

“She had a great swim in the individual 100 breaststroke and an awesome swim in the relay. She continues to look for ways and seek ways to be even more competitive.”

From Grange in County Sligo, McSharry cut her teeth competing with the Marlin’s Swimming Club in Ballyshannon.

McSharry had a personal best of 2:07.13 to finish fourth in the 200m breaststroke, while in the 200m medley relay, McSharry and co finished fourth.

McSharry also took a silver in the 400m medley relay alongside Kaitlin Harty, Trude Rothrock and Tjasa Pintar.

There were also bronze medals for McSharry in the 200m free relay and the 400m free relay.
