Glenea United sealed an impressive victory against Milford United, scoring three goals in a strong team performance at Pairc Joe

An early goal through Ciaran McFadden paved the way for a controlled performance for the Glenea men. The home side played some excellent football, keeping hold of possession well throughout the game.

Milford battled hard defensively, but their pursuit of an equaliser often left the visitors exposed at the back. Glenea’s ability to counter at pace was causing the Milford defence serious problems. The home side took full advantage of this in the second half adding two more goals.

Milford searched long and hard to get a goal back but were unable to breakdown the Glenea rear-guard.

Glenea scored the first of the game on the 16th minute. The Milford defence failed to deal with a Joe Coll kick-out which put Ciaran McGeady through on goal. McGeady squared to Ciaran McFadden leaving the winger with an open goal which he calmly converted.

Milford felt hard done by soon after the goal, Martin Maguire cleared a long ball into the box for a corner. Milford players surrounded the referee claiming a handball, but no penalty was given.

Terence Shields whipped a few dangerous balls into the box, but nothing tested Joe Coll. Dean McCarry did rise well on one occasion to nod clear as Gary Merritt was approaching at the back-post.

Martin Maguire and Lee O’Brien both came close to adding a second for the home team as Glenea finished the half strongly. Milford goalkeeper Caolan McGettigan got down well to save on both occasions.

Glenea started the second half as they finished the first. They doubled the score ten minutes into the second half after Barry McGinley’s free-kick from the right touchline bypassed everyone and found its way into the corner.

Ciaran McGeady and Lee O’Brien both coming close to adding a third, Glenea were breaking forward with real pace and purpose at every opportunity.

Peter Doherty almost got on the end of an excellent Ryan Toye cross, but couldn’t stretch far enough to make contact with the ball. Milford were finding chances hard to come by. A finely struck volley from Joey Cullen was the closest they got to a goal.

Glenea continued to create chances, substitutes Ciaran McFadden and Sean McBride both had good efforts on goal. But McGettigan kept Milford in the game, the goalkeeper’s best save of the lot came with ten minutes to go after he acrobatically kept out a Dean McCarry free-kick.

The third goal came just a minute after McGettigan’s save. Lee O’Brien finished beautifully with his left foot from just inside the box after some fine work by player-manager Ryan McFadden to create it.

“It was a good result, always nice to keep a clean sheet and we’ll just move on to next week’s game now.” Said McFadden after the game.
