“It’s huge” – Coláiste Cholmcille boss O’Reilly hails historic Markey Cup triumph

Philip O’Reilly hailed his ‘outstanding’ goalkeeper Sean Taylor as Coláiste Cholmcille won a first ever Danske Bank Markey Cup title yesterday.

Coláiste Cholmcille 4-11 Coláiste na Carraige 0-12

The Ballyshannon school had Taylor to thank for a clean sheet that paved the way for a famous win on a day when Jackub Machunik, Dylan Gallagher, Oisin Rooney and Conall Sweeny netted.

Coláiste na Carraige, old hands on these big days, saw Aaron Doherty kick ten points, but the goals were key and Taylor’s brilliance saw Coláiste Cholmcille take the win.

“The saves were the big difference,” O’Reilly said.

“Once they didn’t get a goal our two, that was tough for them. Our keeper was outstanding today.

“When the purple patch came for them we were able to curtail their better players, but we came back into it ourselves.”

Shane McGrath created the opening goal for Coláiste Cholmcille, as Machunik fired home in the 8th minute.

Just two minutes later, they were at it again as Gallagher fisted home from Dean Carroll’s long ball and they were 2-2 to 0-2 ahead.

After only four minutes, Coláiste Cholmcille had Matthew McClay black carded and Gallagher was given a similar punishment in the 22nd minute.

Coláiste Cholmcille led 2-6 to 0-4 at half-time with Carroll, Seamus Keogh and Carroll again on the mark.

Coláiste na Carraige

Coláiste na Carraige had plenty of chances and in the first half Kenny Doogan shot wide while Oran Doogan drove against a post.

In the first minute of the second half, Taylor superbly denied Lanty Molloy, but the Carrick men hit back with Doherty (3) and Molloy steering over points.

The comeback hopes were dent a big blow with Carroll, Jason Granaghan and Sweeney on the mark.

Taylor denied Garry Molloy with a fine save and Coláiste Cholmcille added two late goals.

Rooney blasted home after a neat build-up before Keogh teed up Sweeney for a fourth and final goal.

O’Reilly said: “It’s huge. We got to the final last year and lost it. We didn’t want to come away without it again. Everything like this lifts the school and the town.

“This is a phenomenal group of lads, they’re really talented.”
