How far could you run in 24 hours? Eddie Gallen didn’t do badly

EDDIE GALLEN of Finn Valley Athletic Club  finished second in the Energia 24-hour Race – the AAI National 24-hour Championships – in Belfast on Friday.

Gallen, who is now based in Madrid has his family, is from from Meenreagh, Ballybofey, and has an abundance of cousins in the Finn Valley area. On this occasion – his 31st event of its type – he covered 138.2 miles (222 kilometres) over the course of the 24 hours. He holds the Donegal record of over 139 miles.

The race, based out of the Mary Peters track in Belfast, was won by Eoin Keith from Cork, who covered a mammoth 142 miles (228 kilometres), winning the event for the second time in three years. The 46-year-old admitted afterwards he has considered pulling out after eight hours.

Melbourne-based Malcolm Gamble was third, clocking up 136 miles (219 kilometres) and collapsed at the finish.
